I enjoy using Windows XP partly because it is so much better than previous versions of Windows, but also because so much of the chat software I like to use are made for it. I would be interested in others views on best operating systems for chat software that is widely used. |

I know this was about chat software, but since there haven't been replies, I'll go slightly off topic. (I don't chat that often.)
There is no such thing as a reliable, predictable, efficient operating system. They all malfunction, slow to a crawl, and require special interaction by the user to end runaway processes.
Surprisingly, windows XP has been rather stable for me. Linux (Mandrake) has also been stable and generally faster.
More "mainstream" apps for windows ofcourse.
Commercial Unixes aren't really better, but I only use them at work (and are being replaced largely by Linux)
I'm not much of a Mac Person, but OS X feels a lot like NextStep.
I haven't tried Vista yet.

Windows is probably to most popular operating system. I began with Bill Gates DOS 2.0 and then with Windows. Back then he did a very good job of writing software. Then he got so big and popular that he lost his way. The dollar became more important than did the quality of his products. Windows is really a bad piece of software floks. Every time you ad a program to your computer you must reboot it...??? I do not have to do that wil Linux. I use UBUNTU 8.1 on my laptop and I can chat, use yahoo messenger, read Word files, etc. I do not need to reboot my computer when I add a new piece of software.
UBUNTU looks like a windows type operation system and is a Linux system. It does not crash my computer and is very stable. Let me tell you why Linux is such a much better product than is MS Windows. Linux is a public domain product, which means that it is basically free. That is correct folks, I said free. You can download it off the internet for free. Linux s supported by thousands of computer programming experts from around the world. They use Linux in their work and when they develop an improvement they send in to the Linux control group who look at it and then they send this improvement out as a BATA issue to programmers around the world who all look at it, try it, massage it, and try to crash it. When it passes this test it is then considered to become a part of a new issue. This process take many months to complete and is not rushed to get it to market for money. The bottom line is if you really want a good stable operating system then you should look at the different Linux products out there. UBUNTU is one. KNOPPIX is another. You can download these two and run them from your CD without installing them. They do run slow this way, but it will give you a chance to see it, feel it, play with it, and all without changing your present computer setup...imagin that...;o) Check it out for yourself. Don't just take my word on this.
GOOGLE these operating systems and see for yourself.

Don't complain about vista if you dont own it. It is a better opperating system than XP anyday. EX: Vista looks for the problem to shutdown a nonresponsive program while Xp just sends another shutdown command at it, and then gives up if it doesn't work. -__-
